What is a Vehicle Registration?

The Vehicle Registration (officially: Registration Certificate Part I) is the most important document for your vehicle. It must be carried on every trip and contains all relevant technical data.
In the vehicle registration you will find the following important information:
Field E - VIN
Field P.2 - Power in kW
Field V.7 - CO2 Emissions
Field 2.1/2.2 - HSN/TSN
While the registration certificate (Part I) must be carried, the vehicle title (Registration Certificate Part II) should be kept safely at home. It serves as proof of ownership.

Where is the HP number on the registration?
Engine power is shown on the registration in Field P.2 in kilowatts (kW), not directly in HP. All details about Field P.2
Conversion: kW × 1.36 = HP. Example: 110 kW × 1.36 = approx. 150 HP

What is the difference between HSN and TSN?
The HSN (Manufacturer Code) in Field 2.1 identifies the vehicle manufacturer (4 digits). More about HSN
The TSN (Type Code) in Field 2.2 designates the exact vehicle type (3 characters). More about TSN

How do I calculate vehicle tax?

Essential knowledge about vehicle registration
What should I know about vehicle registration documents?
The vehicle registration consists of two parts: Part I (registration certificate) must be carried during every drive. Part II (vehicle title) is the ownership document and should be kept safely at home.
Both documents contain technical vehicle data such as VIN, engine displacement, power output and are required for registration/deregistration.
Lost registration certificate – what to do?
Apply for a replacement at the registration office. You will need: ID card, vehicle title (Part II), affidavit of loss, and the last inspection report.
Costs vary between €11–50 depending on the authority. In case of theft, also file a report with the police.
What is the VIN and where can I find it?
The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is the 17-digit "fingerprint" of your vehicle. It is listed in Field E of the registration certificate.
The VIN is also stamped in the engine compartment and door frame. You need it for spare parts, recall actions and vehicle history checks.
Driving without registration – what penalty?
Driving without registration certificate costs a €10 warning fine. If others are endangered, the fine increases to €25.
Important: A copy or photo of the registration is not valid – the original must be carried. Color copies can even raise suspicion of document forgery!
What towing capacity am I allowed?
The permitted towing capacity is listed in Fields O.1 and O.2: O.1 = braked (with own brakes), O.2 = unbraked (max. 750 kg).
License note: With class B, the combination may weigh max. 3.5 t. For heavier trailers, you need BE or B96.
